A Misunderstanding
A single gentle touch, made with the most sensitive of her tactile limbs, caused a quick but agonizing death. The angry mob pursued the alien back to the ship.
Years after the incident, the last thing the aliens ever said was translated: "Please don't kill her, she's only a child. We didn't know."

nice article, but i didn't totally understand it, who touched who and who died.
When communication is a problem, there is utter chaos...
and its tragic too...
shakeobros,
The alien touched a person, who died, and then all the aliens died. Just because of a gentle touch that wasn't meant to do anything other than gently caress another.
Mona,
Indeed, I couldn't agree more. Everyone should speak English (just kidding.) Wouldn't telepathy be wonderful?
It would be wonderful yes...only if it could make one drink water!
Communication always an issue.
misunderstandings can have some terrible outcomes
Nice 55
Smiles from the Moon
Interesting story and has historical roots in what happened with contact by the West in the Americas. Just a fun 55 today!
Excellent. Good flash fiction impresses me so much. I can't do it. This had such a great arc to it.
powerful 55,
love the theme in it,
misunderstand costs,
misunderstanding hurts.
OUCH! Little did she know that she would kill a human! We can be so ruthless... phew! And here we are, fearing aliens... WE should be the ones we fear...
A tight 55!
It'a like a version of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" in 55 words.
Nice sci-fi take on this 55!
What a wonderfully written story...beginning, middle, end - in 55 words. I usually wimp out with poems because an actual story is so difficult to do. Great job!! :)

This reminds me of poor sweet little E.T. We are all aliens, and must love and understand each other.
Well done, indeed. In a way, this is what happened with the Spanish and the Incas.
I see John has also made the point.
wise 55,
the implication is great....

Oh, this is a heartwrenching description of jumping to conclusions. With no common language, a gesture of greeting is interpreted as a threat. Excellent post.
Such an intriguing glimpse...
