55 Flash Fiction - 42?
"Eureka! That's it! That's what the purpose of life and the universe is."
His confidence in his conclusion was irrevocable.
"I need to eat something." He fell asleep with the radio on.
Upon awakening, he thought about his conclusion, and realized how preposterous it was, realizing he didn't remember why he'd thought it.

"Damned drugs."

This is a warning to any who might consider taking "recreational" drugs. They won't help you think, they won't help you at all. All they will do is screw your head up. Don't do drugs.

That brings two thoughts to the mind:
That sleeping over something would make you feel differently when you wake up
& that Life has no obligation to conform to the past, even if that past is a few hours old. Or to be more precise, even a few minutes old. Truth changes every minute with changing situation, & even as I speak this, too much water has already gone down the river...
As they say, the only thing permanent in life is Change...
Ah, geez, ain't that always the way? I get my most "brilliant" ideas just before I fall asleep, and then they're gone forever.:)
` Recreational drugs? What if they're not being used recreationally?
` I was reading in Scientific American Mind that hallucinogens and stuff are being successfully used to treat patients.
` I remember it said that mushrooms completely make Obsessive Compulsive Disorder vanish - for a few weeks. One dose of Ketamine makes depression just go away for quite a while.
` Therapists have been doing 'guided trips' for all kinds of things, working out people's problems and all. I'm not kidding! It works, too!
` I've never had any of those, but half the people I know have, and I don't see the problem as long as they're used properly, and I also have no idea what you mean about screwing up your head.
` Nevertheless, here's some thoughts of mine (because I've had many on the subject of which drugs are harmful):
` Did you know that the all-powerful Church has squashed the use of mind-altering drugs because they may cause people to have experiences that the Church didn't agree with and encourage people to be heathens? Well that, and because they were part of other people's religions.
` Thus, proper use of these substances is not something most users even know about. I think that's the main problem with them.
` Other drugs like heroin, meth, cocaine, and of course crack, should probably never be taken, considering they're what have produced all these junkies I see everywhere that are just messed up beyond belief.
` And they can be really evil - maybe a lot of these people were not the greatest to begin with, but these particular drugs can certainly bring out the worst in someone.
` Most illegal drug users in my town smoke pot. I don't know of anyone who has had a problem because of it. I know lots of people who drink, too. Some of them DO have problems.
` As far as I know this is true in general, and I guess that makes sense after all because alcohol is addicting. What does that tell you?
` While I'm at it, some people who work at the ER told me the other day that they see a loooooooootta drug overdoses, particularly meth, crack and heroin, not to mention alcohol poisoning. How many 'pot overdoses' do they see?
` ZERO!!!
` My bet on the reason for your message 'just don't do recreational drugs ever' is that you've either never done drugs or they have caused some harrowing experience in your life, or both.
Mona,
You are absolutely correct, truth changes and I will add, there are many truths. As for change, I'd welcome some, especially change for the better.
SJ,
Keep a pen and paper next to your bed, of course you'll have to write more than you wanted, to avoid forgetting what your reminder is about.
S E E Quine,
I haven't the least bit of hesitancy over the proper use of drugs, and in fact don't think that doctors are the only people who could make the determination who should get what. I do think they are better prepared than someone who has a sub average IQ, or who is totally ignorant of what a drug does. The fact is that many drugs are derived from age old remedies that have been common in some cultures.
If someone with a problem opposite what a drug treats takes that drug though, don't you think it could aggravate the problem, perhaps to the ultimate consequence of death, be it their own or someone else's?
Pot may not produce visible problems, but that isn't to say it doesn't produce problems. It can inhibit thought and or speed of thought. It dulls the mind, and it stays in the body for much longer than the brief high lasts.
Should it show up in a drug screening for employment, it could change the course of a life or a family, so even if it doesn't directly screw with a mind, that could lead to an indirect screwup of it.
As to your bet, you'd lose. It has been decades, I never had any harrowing experiences, but I still regret it and wonder how much better I would have been had I never touched the stuff.
` Of course! That was my THIRD guess ;) Interesting. But now I gotta know what it is you did... (OMG it's sad how much I love DrugStories!)
My brain goes into all kinds of weird states when I'm falling asleep...I don't know...maybe its getting visual or virutal or spritual and words don't describe it...or maybe it just goes places where logic does not apply.
But I've had that experience often. I try not to explain the brilliance that can't be explained, anymore.
xx
pinks

and of course it's 42.

I like snowelf. I find sober ways to screw myself up or get into trouble. I'll enjoy the occasional glass of wine and that's it for me!
I've seen too many friends lose everything to that "one more high"
Great 55 Charles!
Charles...no 55??? I got one up...wooohoooo! lol
(((HUGS)))
Nice. Damned flash 55 fictions :D
So much with so little!
Great title :) I take it you've read H2G2 too?
I've read this theory, that you can remember what you were thinking when you're drunk or high, only when you reach that same level of intoxication again. SO, I'd like to poke a hole in your story, if I may :D But then that's not what it was about, was it?
NGAC,
I read it probably 12-13 years ago. The entirety of the series, in fact. I am a bit of the SF fan.
If it can only be achieved through a similar level of intoxication, then getting at the process leading to the thoughts would be an exercise in futility, in that at such levels communicating the reasons would be incomprehensible and likely incoherent.
Like I said, don't do drugs. You'll be better off.
